How to get started
Browsing for Information
A good way to browse and navigate through the newspaper
is the contents pane.
The table of contents appears on the left side of the
screen allowing you to view both the table of contents
and the document at the same time.
|
|
Clicking a plus sign next to a heading in the
table of contents expands that heading to show
additional information. Clicking a minus sign
hides the information.
|
|
Clicking on a
heading in the table of contents takes you to
the corresponding heading in the document pane. |
Go Back-Go Forward
Use Go Back Arrow to back up to the previous location
in the history list
Use Go Forward Arrow to advance to the next location
in the history list
Next Hit-Previous Hit
After performing a search you can:
Use Next Hit to advance the cursor to the next hit.
Use Previous Hit to return to the previous hit.
Use Next Partition to advance to the next article.
Use Previous Partition to return to the next article.
Finding what you are looking for
There are 3 main types
of searches to search for information.
1. Searching all
of the newspaper
Keyword Search
The Query dialog(F3) allows you to use natural language
to search for terms.
An example of a basic key wordsearch is: government
policy
"Searching for a phrase"
You may search for an exact phrase. Enclose the phrase
in quotation marks.
For example: "federal government policy"
2. Searching using
Boolean Operators, Wildcard, Word Stem and Synonym searches
|
And |
“Government
and policy” |
|
Or |
“Government
or policy” |
|
Not |
“Government
not policy” |
|
Exclusive
Or |
“Government
xor policy” |
|
?
Wildcard search * |
Government* |
|
$
Synonym search |
Use
the synonym (or thesaurus) wildcard to find synonyms
of a term. |
|
%
Word Stem search |
work%
finds word forms of the term work (such as work,
works, or worked). |
3. Searching just
parts of the newspaper
The Newspaper Search template uses the field
scope to search on only the relevant sections of Headline,
Section, Column,
Byline and Date. You can access this feature by going
to “Search” from the file menu and then selecting “Newspaper
Search”.
The Advanced Query dialog (F2) gives you the greatest
control over how Folio Views searches the newspaper.
Changing the scope of your search allows you to focus
on a particular subset of the newspaper.
You may limit the scope of your search to a particular
contents heading, level, field, highlighter, note, group,
or popup.
You will need to set an opening bracket as well as a closing bracket
to enclose your scope and
search term.
After you have selected your scope you need to set a
colon (:) before typing in or selecting your search
keyword.
Boolean or phrase searches can be used.
Example: [Field Section: Sport]
